The History of Blackfriars Priory
Blackfriars Priory, located in the historic city of Gloucester, Gloucestershire, boasts many centuries of rich history and elegance. The venue, which is now renowned for hosting exquisite weddings, was founded in the early 13th century by a Dominican order, known also as ‘black friars’ due to their black cloaks. The site was previously a Norman house and was one of the first dominican priories in England. A key feature of the priory is its stunning cloister garden—the largest surviving example of a medieval cloister in England. After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1538, the priory fell into the hands of Sir Thomas Bell, a successful local businessman who converted it into his residence. Over the years, Blackfriars has served various purposes, from private property, a school, a factory, and now a romantic wedding venue. In the 1960s, with the threat of demolition, the Gloucester Civic Trust took over the priory, carried out significant restoration work, and opened it to the public. This beautiful wedding venue’s history, architecture and atmosphere make it a remarkable setting for all manner of events, and it continues to captivate and inspire visitors to Gloucester.
