The History of The Great Tythe Barn
The Great Tythe Barn, a Grade II listed building, is steeped in history and stands as one of the most distinctive wedding venues in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. Dating back to the 16th century, this elaborate stone barn was originally part of an expansive Monastic farm used for storing tithes – one tenth of the produced goods given to the Church as a tax. Surviving through eras of civil war, agricultural revolution, and industrial transformation, the barn remained a vital part of the local farming community. In the 20th century, the estate changed hands multiple times and, at one point, was used as a refuge for people during the war. The barn fell into disrepair until it was painstakingly restored in the 1990s, preserving its original features with a delicate blend of modern luxury. Today, the Great Tythe Barn is a sought-after venue, retaining its historic charm while offering a luxurious setting for nuptials and other celebrations. With its cobblestone courtyard, beautifully manicured gardens, and the stunning stone barn itself, the Great Tythe Barn’s legacy continues to flourish as it adds new chapters to its enduring history.
